HISTORY

It was founded in 1939 in connection with the development of land for cotton growing and the construction of an irrigation canal.

On May 4, 1993, by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of Kazakhstan, the transcription of the name of the city of Dzhetysay in Russian was changed to Zhetysay.

There are ginning, beer and grain factories in the city; plant for the production of vegetable oil.

Here is the university "Syrdariya" and the Kazakh Drama Theater named after K. Zhandarbekov.

The Tashkent-Syrdariya-Bukhara railway and the Zhetysay-Shymkent-Almaty highway pass through the city.

Until 2018, it was the center of the Maktaaral district.

Separation of Maktaaral district

On June 6, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev signed a decree amending the administrative and territorial structure of the South Kazakhstan region, according to the Akorda website.

According to the decree, the Maktaaral district should be redistributed and a new Zhetisay district should be created with its center in the city of Zhetisay. Myrzakent settlement should become the administrative center of Maktaaral district. Saryagash district should also be divided into Saryagash district with the district center in Saryagash and Keles district with the center in the village of Abay. The government is charged with implementing these changes.

At the same time, large-scale changes concerning the regional center are initiated by the leadership of SKR. On June 5, the regional maslikhat approved the proposal to transfer the regional center from Shymkent to Turkestan. Also, a proposal was made to the maslikhat to assign Shymkent, on the eve of the city declared as a millionth, of the status of a city of republican significance. Currently, only Astana and Almaty have such status.

The Maktaaral district will be divided not into three districts as it was supposed at the beginning, but into two. The center of Zhetisay district will be Zhetisay, Maktaaralskogo - Myrzakent.
